| November 12th, 2008 West Erie County, DWCO Randy Leighton, WCO Brook Tolbert Conditions: Erie fell victim to a significant lake effect snow event on Monday with a blanket of 4 to 5 inches of heavy wet snow. With temperatures climbing in the fifties and rain predicted combined with the gradual snow run off, we should see a nice rise in the tribs along with some good color. The West county tribs are loaded with steelhead and the bite generally has been great. Crowded areas this past weekend included the Legion Park area, the Girard Boro Park Area near the sewage treatment plant, the Elk Creek Access area and of course the Walnut Creek Access area. Current trib conditions are still on the clear side with fair to good flow in many areas. |

Within the first 20 minutes of opening there were at least five fish caught. Rick Reed from Washington, PA was the first to catch his fish when the marina opened for fishing. It took him 2 ½ minutes to hook the first fish. It was around 20 inches long. He was using Power Bait. Color was Sherbert. He was standing on the south side of marina. |

| November 5th, 2008 West Erie County, DWCO Randy Leighton, WCO Brook Tolbert Conditions: The rain from last week brought the West County Tribs up enough put the steelhead on the move again. A good number of fish moved in and up stream as far south as the Mckean Hole on Elk Creek and the Millcreek Mall on Walnut Creek. Fishing was good to excellent through this past week end as the tribs lowered. The tribs have now dropped to the lower levels we saw before the rain with fish holding in the deeper pools and pockets. This past weekend saw anglers frequently catching their limits through out the tribs and conditions as crowded as it can get. The Walnut Creek Marina basin is now open for fishing and anglers have been doing very well there, especially at night. Current trib conditions as of this writing are low and clear with some flow. Lake Erie water temperature off the Port of Erie is 55 degrees. From the Department of Environmental Protection Regarding Walnut Creek: |

| October 29th, 2008 West Erie County, DWCO Randy Leighton, WCO Brook Tolbert Conditions: The long dry spell was recently broken with some precipitation this past weekend however it was not significant enough to have much effect on the tribs. Generally conditions are still pretty low and clear in most areas. Steelhead have been able to work there way upstream above route 20 only to often get trapped in what few deeper pools there are. None the less, anglers have been making the best of it with many limits taken. Light line and small presentations are simply a must. There has been plenty of elbow room in the upstream areas with the crowded conditions remaining near the mouths and access areas. Wind and extreme wave conditions combined with gale force winds have kept boaters off the lake. Waves were hitting 12 to 14 feet as of Tuesday afternoon. Current West County trib conditions are low and clear with some flow. Current Lake Erie water temperature off the Port of Erie is 56 degrees. Walnut Creek Basin: Weather permitting, the docks and launch ramps are scheduled to be removed this week with the Walnut Creek Marina basin schedule to be open to fishing on Friday October 31st. Costumes are optional. The Walnut Creek Basin can provide great fishing, especially with the low trib conditions we are experiencing. The basin is handicap accessible and is a great place for the kids to fight that first steelhead. Restroom facilities are close by along with a a place to warm up, phone service, ice, information, and fishing licenses. Law Enforcement: |

| ANTLERS AFLOAT: Here is something that George Yates from New Castle, his son Jonathan, and a fellow fisherman, Greg Lasko of Erie saw while they were out fishing off Elk Creek about 5 miles out in 70 ft of water. It is a six point buck. Jonathan took the picture with his cell phone but you can make out what it is. Greg was able to turn the deer and head him back to shore. That was the last anything was heard of from the deer. WALNUT CREEK: Here is a picture of the mouth of Walnut Creek after it rained for three days. It was taken today 10/2/2008. Here is another shot of the creek looking south while I was standing on the north channel wall. Notice the sign that is on the other side of the creek. You will know where this is by recognizing the signs. This sign is straight out of the marina. And another shot looking north towards the lake. This sign is the one across from the tree on the channel wall. |

| October 1st, 2008 West Erie County, DWCO Randy Leighton, WCO Brook Tolbert Conditions: Little to no rain has continued to leave area tribes very low and clear and down to a trickle in some of the upper stretches. The fish that have moved in are in a holding pattern with little movement south of route 5. A good number of fish have been coming in in the early morning hours and at sunset allowing fair to good steelhead fishing along the wall at Walnut Creek, from the Elk Creek Access north to the Lake, and along the shorelines at Trout and Godfrey Runs. Wind and waves have kept the water levels of the tribs fairly good near the mouths. Catches along the wall at Walnut Creek were good this past weekend with fish in the 7 to 10 Lb range. Night time temperatures have been getting cooler and with some much needed precipitation, we should see additional steelhead movement. Forecasts for the week are calling for up to a 50 percent chance of rain and night time temperatures dipping into the 40's. Perch fishing is still good to excellent north of Walnut Creek. Walleye fishing although still fair, has begun to fall off as is typical this time of year. Current Lake Erie water temperature is 66 degrees off Toledo, 68 degrees off Cleveland, and 67 degrees off the Port of Erie. Current West County trib conditions as of this writing are extremely low and very clear with very little flow. Law Enforcement: |

| September 24th, 2008 West Erie County, DWCO Randy Leighton, WCO Brook Tolbert Conditions: The tribs have dropped to very low clear conditions with long range weather forecasts showing very little rain. Steelhead will be moving mostly at night if at all, with the best chances for success at dawn or dusk. Fish are scattered throughout the Walnut Project waters and the Manchester Hole as well as lower Elk Creek with reports of a few fish making it up to route 5, although there are still no big numbers. The Lakeshore at Trout and Godfrey Runs are producing fish at night and in the early morning hours. Many anglers have been heading for the lakeshore with the tribs so low. Several dozen anglers along wall at Walnut Creek did quite well this past weekend with a number of limits observed. Most of the fish were caught before dawn with the activity slowing dramatically after sunrise. Low clear water and very line shy fish will dictate the lightest of presentations if you are going to give a a try. Fly anglers should do well with fluorocarbon tippets. Conventional anglers will do best reducing line strength to 4 lb. and even 2 lb. fluorocarbon line at times. Very light floats and small baits such as sucker spawn flies and single eggs may be the ticket. Anglers are reminded again that fishing from the East bank of the Manchester Hole is not permitted nor is fishing the West side of Walnut Creek from the end of the wall North to the mouth. Boaters are still bringing in good catches of Walleye and Perch, wind and waves permitting. Boaters have been trying their luck trolling the Lake near the mouths for steelhead but there have been no reports of great activity yet. Current Lake Erie water temperature off Toledo is 66 degrees, off Cleveland, 68 degrees, and off the Port of Erie, 68 degrees. Current West County tributary conditions as of this writing are extremely low, very clear, and little flow. Few More Regulations Pertinent To The Walnut Creek Access: |

| STEELHEAD: Mary Lynn Ecker of Erie, PA, brought in a nice male Steelhead for Angler Award. He weighed in at 10 pounds 8 ounces and was 31 inches long with a girth of 17 ¼ inches. She caught him in Walnut Creek on the South side of the channel. He was caught on a white jig. WALLEYE & PERCH: The Walleye have started becoming hard to find. Most guys are trolling from straight out of Walnut in around 65-70 ft of water and trolling West to Elk Creek. The Perch are still out Northwest of Walnut Creek in about 55-60 ft of water. I am told there is also a school out off Trout Run and the clay banks. WALNUT CREEK: |

| September 17th, 2008 West Erie County, DWCO Randy Leighton, WCO Brook Tolbert Conditions: The remains of hurricane Ike blew through the Erie area earlier this week bringing additional rain and high winds. The winds made for difficult lake conditions but did put a bit of color an depth to the area tribs. Long range forecasts over the next week are not calling for any rain to speak of so we should be seeing a quick drop to very low an very clear conditions once again. Some steelhead have been holding in the lower stretches of Walnut and Elk Creeks and have been spotted surfacing along the shoreline at Trout Run. A number of steelhead have already been caught in the "chutes" area of Walnut Creek and have been spotted as far as Route 5. A number of 10 LB plus fish have been reportedly been taken out of Walnut. Lets again emphasize that the tribs are not shadowed with steelhead yet, how ever, for those willing fish at night where permitted or at daybreak or sunset may be rewarded with a few catches. Good Perch fishing and fair to good walleye fishing should continue, wind and waves permitting. Current Lake Erie water temperatures off Toledo are 67 degrees, off Cleveland, 67 degrees, and of the Port of Erie, 69 degrees. Fall Bass Fishing in Presque Isle Bay: As the Fall season approaches and the waters of Presque Isle bay start to cool, area anglers can often find some of the best action of the year. Cooler temperatures mean more oxygen which often translates to more action. Most types of presentations can be effective at times from the rattling crank baits, to top water baits, to the plastics. Weedless hooks are almost a must in most areas of of the Bay. Very often, Presque Isle Bay will be calm when Lake Erie blowing. The calmer waters of the Bay can often save the trip to Erie when the Lake conditions are rough. Important Reminder Concerning Overnight Anglers and Boaters Using the Walnut Creek Access Area: |

| STEELHEAD: I have had numerous people calling and asking about the Steelhead. There are a couple people trying to catch something in Walnut Creek. There are a few stragglers coming in but it is not “the run”. The boaters are starting to pick a couple up out in the trenches. The water temperature at this writing is 70 degrees and the air temperature is going to be in the mid to low 70’s. Look for the water temperature to go around 65 degrees and look for boats trolling in front of the creeks. That’s a very good indication of where they are. WALLEYE & PERCH: The fish are there but they seem to be filled with the bait that is out there. I was told that the bottom is covered with Perch but they just aren’t hungry. That is out in 55-65 ft of water straight out of Walnut Creek. The Walleye are outside of the Perch pack. They are in 65-75 ft of water straight out of Walnut Creek and trolling West. Plugs and Crawler harnesses are the best. The colors seem to be either Chartreuse or Black and Silver PARKING: The Northwest parking lot is for Slip Holders and Handi-capped ONLY. It is designated so by the sign that is there as you enter the site. If you are not a slip holder or have a Handi-Capped placard, you will receive 1 courtesy warning then the second time is a fine. Parking is available Northeast and the whole way down to the road entrance. Also, if parking in the South lot, park along the creek. The larger part is for boat trailers. You will notice the size is larger CHANNEL WALL: All shore fisher persons are to pull their lines for boaters as they enter and exit the channel. It is a safety hazard for the boaters if they get line wrapped on their props. PLEASE, pull lines for boaters. Again, there will be a fine for not observing the rules and regulations which are clearly marked. |

| September 10th, 2008 West Erie County, DWCO Randy Leighton, WCO Brook Tolbert Conditions: A little rain and night time temperatures in the 50's have put a few steelhead on the move. No great numbers yet, but enough to keep a few anglers busy over the last week. Fish have been entering the west county tribs at night with a few fish holding at Walnut Creek up and into the Project water holes. A number of nice fish were caught this past Sunday morning off the wall at Walnut and along the shoreline at Trout Run. Again the emphasis is a on small numbers. Perch fishing remains good to great when the lake is calm. Walleye seem to be on the move although catches are still fair to good for those willing to find them. Lake Erie water temperatures as of this writing are 69 degrees off Toledo, 70 degrees off Cleveland, and 69 degrees off the Port of Erie. West County trig conditions are low and clear with fishable conditions at or near the tributary mouths. |

| WALLEYE: Denny Halula of New Alexandria, PA came in with a nice 9 pound 5 ounce Walleye for Angler Award. It was 30 inches long and had a girth of 17 ¼ inches. He caught it out in 65 ft of water West of Trout Run on a “Renowsky”. The color was Blue/Silver. Nine year old Damien Partin of Oakdale, PA brought in his 6 pound 12 ½ ounce Walleye for Angler Award. It was 28 inches long and had a girth of 16 inches. He caught it out in 68 ft of water straight out of Walnut Creek on a plug. His color was green with black strips. Ten year old Zack Ansinger brought in a 6 pound 2 ounce Walleye for Angler Award. It was 26 inches long and had a girth of 14 ½ inches. He caught it out in 70 ft of water straight out of Walnut Creek on a Renowsky. His color was gold. Most of the people I have talked to say they are getting them in 65-72 ft of water straight out of Walnut Creek and most are using lures/plugs. PERCH: I know they are getting Perch out in 62 – 65 ft of water straight out of Walnut Creek but no one is bringing them in for Angler Award. We have had quite a few boaters say they limited. STEELHEAD: I have had numerous people calling and asking about the Steelhead. All I can say is there are a couple in the streams but the run is not here. The boaters are just now starting to catch them in the trenches. The water temperature at this writing is 71 degrees and the air temperature is going to be in the high 70’s and mid 80’s till next week at least. Look For the water temperature to go around 65 degrees and look for boats trolling in front of the creeks. That is a very good indication that the fish are trying to come in. The first cold rain we get usually will bring them in. Call our office during office hours if you wish to find out what the temperature is and if the boats are trolling in front of the creeks. | Conditions: In a typical turn for this time of year the Perch fishing has picked up dramatically and the walleye fishing has slowed down a bit. Many limits of walleye are still being brought in although it is taking a bit longer to get them in the deeper water. Catch rates are still good with many 8 to 9 lb fish brought in. Perch catches seem to be on the increase with the schools holding in 70' of water off the point at Presque Isle and due north of Walnut Creek in to 62 to 65 feet of water. Perch limit are still common with jumbos over 2 pounds occasionally brought in. (2 LB 9 OZ is the state record). The "perch packs" off the Point and north of Walnut Creek were large this past weekend. An unbelievable number of boats were clustered north of the Conneaut, Ohio harbor in 70' feet of water. Some steelhead are being picked up off shore and evidence of "staging" is apparent in 40 to 50 feet of water. There have been a few confirmed reports of steelhead being caught off the wall at Walnut Creek and a few Browns caught along the shoreline at Trout Run. Air and water temperatures are a too warm at this time so support any real activity. How ever, with a few cool nights and a little rain (that shouldn't be a problem in Erie) it won't be long. Lake Erie Water Temperature off Toledo is 71 degrees, off Cleveland, 70 degrees, and off Erie, 72 degrees. The Erie Tributaries are still at "summer levels", very low and very clear.

| August 27th, 2008 West Erie County, DWCO Randy Leighton, WCO Brook Tolbert Anglers continue to slam the Perch with countless limits being brought in. Small schools have been found as shallow as 30' but the best fishing is still due north of Walnut creek in 60-65' of water. Anglers have also been doing very well north of the Conneaut Harbor just over the line in Ohio. Local bait and tackle shops are doing their best to keep up with the demand for shiners and perch rigs which in combination are the hot ticket. Walleye fishing has slowed somewhat, but is still much better than we have seen in years. Walleye are scattered, but the best bets are still the deeper waters of the first and second trenches northwest of Walnut Creek. Although there are reports of different baits being successful, it seems that chartreuse and purple tandem crawler harnesses are consistently the most productive. A few steelhead were observed off the wall at Walnut Creek but again no real activity yet. Lake Erie water temperature off Toledo is 71 degrees, off Cleveland, 73 degrees and off the Port of Erie, 74 degrees. Current West County Trib conditions are low and clear with little flow although the Walnut Channel Elk Creek from the access north are very fishable. |

West Erie County, DWCO Randy Leighton, WCO Brook Tolbert
Conditions: Late summer early fall weather on Lake Erie can be tricky for boats and anglers alike and this past week has been typical. Fast moving fronts can quickly change serene conditions into capping waves in very short periods of time. Rough water has had boaters flipping the coin as to when to go out, but those that can take a little pounding, don't get sick, and respect what Lake Erie can dish out, have been rewarded with good perch catches in 60 plus feet of water and fair to good numbers of walleye. This is of course not an endorsement to throw caution to the wind...if in doubt, don't head out.
Yes, the cat is out of the bag with a few steelhead caught off the wall at Walnut Creek and even a few have been caught upstream, however, don’t throw the paycheck in the fuel tank quite yet. The few rogue steelhead that have entered the creeks have been just that...a few. Much colder nights and higher water levels are needed for any real activity. Current Lake Erie water temperature of Toledo is 72 degrees, off Cleveland, 73 degrees, and off the Port of Erie, 75 degrees. |

Posted by: Captain Ron Rusch Date Posted: 21:58:09 8/17/08 |
The last several weeks aboard the “SeaWolf “ has seen some great fishing near shore in 38 feet of water and west of Walnut Creek on the south side of the first trench. Captain Ron uses the human rod holder approach of 100 percent participation all the time. Six human rod holders catching 36 walleye, means we had an awesome time. Many anglers hate to put their rod in a manufactured holder and eat lunch. They just don’t want to miss the bite. Two human rod holders catching their own 12 walleye brings smiling faces. The action has been hot way west in 60 to 72 feet of water with some large 10 pound walleye making the cooler. Holding the rod in your hand while drifting and a 10 pounder hits brings excitement and a battle. Fighting a large walleye from the bottom on light tackle is awesome. Walleye fight a lot more than people think. Just go super slow and give it a try. A lot of time these ten pounders return to the bottom several times before the fight is over and netted. |

| August 13th, 2008 West Erie County, DWCO Randy Leighton, WCO Brook Tolbert Conditions: Wind and wave conditions over the past week seemed to have scattered the fish but general, Perch are still hitting strong north and slightly west of Walnut Creek in 62 to 64 feet of water. Anglers are finding the large clusters or packs of boats are not always the best place to limit out. With the recent rough weather conditions, try moving away from the packs of boats if you are not having success. Limits of perch are still common now with the best times being right after sunrise and right before sunset. Perch fishing should remain good into the Fall months, wind and waves permitting, with the largest schools settling in between 50 and 65 feet of water north of Walnut Creek. Shiners are still in good supply at local bait shops. Walleye are still being brought in good numbers with occasional limits being reported. All this and Steelhead season is just around the corner. Current Lake Erie water temperature off Toledo is 71 degrees, off Cleveland, 74 degrees, and off the Port of Erie, 74 degrees. Steelhead? |

So far everyone seems to be having a lot of luck getting the Walleye in close and out deep. Anywhere from 25-40 near shore and 50-75 out deeper. Mostly on worm harnesses with different colors as you can see. PERCH: I have no pictures of Perch but I do know they are getting them. No one wants their picture though. Most are being caught in 55-60 ft of water straight out of Walnut Creek and the same for off of Trout Run. DREDGING: The dredging is done. The lowest spot at the mouth of Walnut Creek is 5 feet according to the dredging crew. This weekend the weather is supposed to be pretty nice. The waves are supposed to be 1-3 ft on Saturday and 2 ft or less on Sunday. But we all know that can change, so if need be you can call our office here at Walnut Creek for the weather and lake conditions during office hours. The number is 814-833-2464. RESTROOMS: Because of vandalism, the restrooms are not open from the outside anymore nor after office hours. The restrooms can be entered through the lobby doors when the office building is open. | July 23rd, 2008 West Erie County, DWCO Randy Leighton, WCO Brook Tolbert Conditions: Perch fishing remains as good as it gets with the action so lively that the Erie Times News made it a front page story. Although the usual schools off of Walnut Creek and the Point and Presque Isle are always productive, many anglers are finding perch all along the lake shore in depth of 45 to 62 feet. Perch rigs and emerald shiners are the setup and can be found at most all area bait shops. Walleye fishing has been good to excellent in the deeper waters of the first trench and the south side of the second trench northwest of walnut Creek. Anglers are starting to pick up a few steelhead in both the first and second trenches. Typically, many are caught by anglers trolling the bottom with spoons in search of walleye. Bass fishing in and around Presque Isle Bay has been good to excellent as well. Current Lake Erie water temperature off Toledo is 75 degrees, off Cleveland, 73 degrees, and off the Port of Erie, 77 degrees. Walnut Creek Access: Dredging has finally started at the mouth of Walnut Creek after a delay in permitting, to clear a large sandbar. Dredging is expected to last through the end of July. Although the channel will remain open throughout the process, boaters should expect possible delays during the week. Depth finders should be monitored when entering or exiting the channel at least until the dredging is complete. Perch Record Could be Coming?: |

| July 9th, 2008 West Erie County, DWCO Randy Leighton, WCO Brook Tolbert Conditions: Perch have become the hot story with many limits being brought in. A good number of jumbo size perch in the 10 to 12" plus size have been caught. Perch have schooled heavily in 52 feet of water north of Walnut Creek and 52 feet of water North of the Point at Presque Ise...just look for the large clusters of anchored boats. Near shore walleye action has slowed a bit perhaps due to the more summer like temperatures and the increase in water temperatures. Anglers searching for walleye are beginning to target the trenches off Walnut. Bass fishing continues to thrive in and around Presque Isle Bay. Anglers are still enjoying plenty of action along the North and South Piers. Rock bass are easily caught this time of year and can be a good target for kids off the piers or anywhere along the Bayfront. | July 2nd, 2008 West Erie County, DWCO Randy Leighton, WCO Brook Tolbert Conditions: Walleye conditions have remained excellent along the shore from Walnut Creek to the Ohio line. Fish are still holding shallow in depths as low as 15 feet, however some anglers are beginning to move to deeper water to try their luck. Perch fishing continues to improve although lake conditions have been hit or miss over the last week. Bass are still biting along the shore line and along the Walnut Access Wall although the action has started to slow with the warming lake temperatures. Lake Erie water temperature as of this writing is 70 degrees off Toledo, 68 degrees off Cleveland, and 71 degrees off the Port of Erie. Sand Bar Caution at Walnut Creek: There is a sand bar on the east side of the entrance to the Walnut Creek channel. Exiting the channel should always be done with caution and an eye on the depth finder. Ever changing lake conditions can change channel entrance depths in days. The PFBC will begin dredging this area on Monday, July 7th. In the mean time, when entering or exiting the Walnut Creek Channel, stay centered for a least a one hundred yards or so from the mouth before heading east. Keep an eye on your depth finder if you have one, and keep the engine trimmed up. Visual Distress Signals: |

| June 18th, 2008 West Erie County, DWCO Randy Leighton, WCO Brook Tolbert Conditions: The past week has seen spectacular walleye fishing in 20-45 feet of water along the Erie shoreline. Smaller boats were trying their luck and having some success in as little as 10-15 feet of water. Lake Erie patrols on Sunday saw anglers netting fish after fish. Limits were the norm. Crawler harnesses, plugs, and stick baits trolled on weighted flat lines were all working well. Many boats were making their catches off of wide spread planer boards. Many said the fishing has been as good as Lake Erie can offer. The recent cold snap the area has experienced may help to keep the large numbers of walleye in the shallower water keeping access easy. Perch have still been a bit elusive, but have started to school in 40 to 45 feet of water Northwest of Walnut Creek. Many of the perch being brought in have been jumbo size. Perhaps this will be the year for another perch size record. A few catfish and bass have been caught in the early evening hours along the channel at the Walnut Creek Access and north of the Elk Creek Access. Current Lake Erie water temperature off Toledo is 69 degrees, off Cleveland, 63 degrees and off the Port of Erie, 70 degrees. Launch Ramp Etiquette: |

WALLEYE: The Walleye seem to be plentiful so far this year. These are Joe Novaks’ (Junk Man) fish he caught with his buddy Dale Mitchell. Here is Joe Novak with one of his catch. He was out on Dale Mitchell’s boat when they caught these out in 30 ft of water off Godfrey. He said they were Rich and Barb Boroski (Afternoon Delight) of Leechburg came in with their limit of Walleye. They were just drifting in 36 ft of water off Trout Run when they caught most of them. They were using worm harnesses and their color was Chartreuse. I have had quite a few limits come in. Most of the boats are out in 20-30 ft of water going from Walnut Creek, west to Godfrey or even Elk and then back. I can see them trolling right in front of Walnut. They seem to be biting on just about anything from what I am told. PERCH: The Perch seem to be slow right now. The boats that are having any luck are finding them out in 35-40 ft of water off Trout Run and a little East. Also, off the G.E. stacks east of the Peninsula I heard they were doing pretty good. Today(Friday)we are having storms most of the day. They are popping up every hour. We are to have thunderstorms for Saturday and Sunday and then Monday and Tuesday the waves are supposed to go up to 2-4 ft. The temperatures have been in the high 80's and low 90's most of this week and it is supposed to be in the 70's the first part of next week. |

| May 28th, 2008 West Erie County, DWCO Randy Leighton, WCO Brook Tolbert Conditions: Bass fishing has slowed a bit but is still fair to good along the Lake Shore and in Presque Isle Bay. Perch are beginning to hit in 30 to 40 feet of water and off the point at Presque Isle. Good perch catches have also been reported north of the Conneaut Ohio harbor. Reports of walleye catches have been occasional at best however this would be typical with Lake Erie temperatures still on the cool side. Although wind and wave conditions cooperated this past weekend, cool temperatures perhaps combined with current economic conditions had boat traffic on the Bay and the Lake on the light side. Pike angling has been fair to good. Not many fish put up a better fight pound for pound. Presque Isle Bay offers some of the best Pike fishing in the country with plenty of trophies waiting to be caught. Pike generally aren't too fussy and often anything shiny will attract their attention. Silver flatfish lures and chrome rattle traps are great choices. Pike also love live shiners (the larger, the better) suspended under a float. Strong line or a steel leader is a good idea to keep their razor sharp teeth from snapping your line. The area in front of the Chestnut Street launch, outside the Cherry Street Marina , and through out the west end of the bay are good target areas Current Lake Erie Water temperatures off Toledo are 58 degrees, off Cleveland, 56 degrees, and 57 degrees off the Port of Erie. Temperatures in Presque Isle Bay averaged 65 degrees this past weekend. |

| February 27th, 2008 West Erie County, DWCO Randy Leighton, WCO Brook Tolbert Conditions: A winter blast hit the Erie area Tuesday leaving up to a foot of wet snow with more expected this week. Area tribs are nearly frozen over completely except for the very fast moving water. A few die hards have been seen out breaking up the ice on the large pools on Walnut and Elk Creek. Ice anglers seeking steelhead have been doing fairly well at the Walnut Creek Access marina, on the ice in the Walnut channel and just off shore at Trout Run. Presque Isle Bay was crowded with ice huts this past weekend. Ice thickness has been reported anywhere from 4 inches up to 10 inches depending on what part of the bay you are on. Catch reports at Presque Isle have been sporadic with mostly blue gills filling the buckets along with smaller perch and the occasional steelhead. Steelhead Moved: As part of the Fairview State Fish Hatchery Program, a good number of spawned out steel head have been returned to the water. This year a signifcant number of steelhead were released into Conneaut Creek in Albion near the Fairgrounds. (look for the big blue building) |

| February 20th, 2008 West Erie County, DWCO Randy Leighton, WCO Brook Tolbert Conditions: Monday afternoon and Tuesday found the Erie County tribs opened up with much of the ice pushed down stream and the water flowing high and mighty. Temperatures dropped into the teens again late Tuesday afternoon created slush and some icing again. As far as hard water fishing goes, caution can not be overemphasized with the rapid freezing and thawing. Anglers were out this past weekend with reports of ice thickness anywhere from 3 to 5 inches of relatively soft ice. There have been reports, both confirmed and unconfirmed of angler "fall throughs" Common sense dictates to the experienced ice angler that in Erie, it typically takes a good solid week of temperatures in the low teens to take the Bay from soft water to stable, hard ice. The constant freeze and thawing we have experienced has been forming multiple layers of frozen ice and slush and not a lot of hard "black ice". The experienced ice angler knows that just because someone is out there the ice is not necessarily safe for fishing or for any other ice activities for that matter. Ice conditions again, are not monitored and in these cases there are no laws for stupidity. When venturing out on to the ice....you are on your on, and for many anglers venturing out on the Bay in marginal conditions, that can be a long way away from rescue. Use your head and be careful. | February 13th, 2008 West Erie County, DWCO Randy Leighton, WCO Brook Tolbert Conditions: The Erie are weather has had more ups and downs than the new Ravine Flyer II roller coaster at Waldameer Park. Mild temperatures and open water has given way to a deep freeze over the last several days. A good blanket of snow covered the area as of late Tuesday afternoon. Area tribs are nearly frozen over again with only the fastest flowing water remaining open. Presque Isle Bay has frozen over again although at this point the ice is very rough from high winds and should be considered unstable. Considerable drifting ice has reformed over Lake Erie again. In short we are in that transition period from soft water to safe hard water fishing. Cold temperatures forecast for the remainder of the week may bring solid ice by the weekend. |
